Falkners Island Jr. Brigade was formed in 2010 to promote youth participation in the care of Faulkners Island and the once a year nesting birds called Roseate Terns.

Under the guidance of Rick Potvin Manager US Fish and Wildlife, Paula Daddio ,Teacher Sound School New Haven, the newly formed brigade assisted with the Faulkners Island Open House in Sept. 2010.Their duties included giving vistors iformation about the island and the lighthouse.

In April 2012 they will be asked to help prepare the nesting sites for the birds, and at some point do a stay -over on the island.

Faulkner’s Lighthouse Restoration

Lighthouse under restoration 2011

Since the founding of the Faulkner’s Light Brigade in 1991 the lighthouse has undergone two major restorations in 1998 and 2010. Most recently the lighthouse was power washed with fresh water, repointed and two coats of paint were applied. The cost of the 2010 restoration was $121,000 and was completed by the professional staff from the International Chimney Corporation. All of the money came from the generous support of the Brigade members. It is recommended that the lighthouse be painted every 5-6 years and completely restored every 10-12 years in order to maintain this local treasure.

“Your Tern” – Sponsor or name a Tern

The Faulkner Light Brigade is in the final stages of developing a program to “Name a Tern”. There are literally thousands of terns on Faulkner’s Island during the summer months. Would you like to name a “new tern” who was “born” on Faulkner Island this coming summer? They are all tagged, so you can follow their travels between Connecticut and South America through a government website. An announcement will be made on this website in the Spring of 2012.

Keep the Light on – Donate Now

Built in 1802, and commissioned by Thomas Jefferson, the Faulkner Island Lighthouse is Connecticut’s second oldest lighthouse tower, and is the only active light station on an island in the state. Faulkner Island is about three and one half miles offshore from Guilford, CT.

The Faulkner’s Light Brigade continues to work on the historic preservation of the lighthouse, erosion control of the island to protect the lighthouse and preservation of the wildlife habitat. Common Terns and Roseate Terns arrive every summer to breed.

Many people have expressed an interest in both the island and the lighthouse. In order to continue with the restoration efforts, support is needed from our many friends. Please help to support our efforts by making your check payable to:  Faulkner’s Light Brigade, P.O. Box 444, Guilford, Connecticut 06437 or by using PayPal on this website.

We have completed installing a live web camera on the island as well as a weather station. Hurricane Irene & Sandy have slowed the process and the weather station still needs repairs. Please consider joining our organization to preserve the island and the historic lighthouse.
