Joel Helander, municipal historian and past chairman of the Faulkner’s Light Brigade, will present a slide lecture at the annual meeting of the Brigade on Monday, May 14, 7:00 p.m., in the Guilford Community Center, 32 Church Street. The general public is cordially invited.
The program will trace the efforts of the Faulkner’s Light Brigade to bring a grass roots citizens campaign to the halls of U.S. Congress. The program also features island history, including use by Native Americans, sale to the English Puritans, farming pursuits, establishment of the light station, heroics of lightkeepers and their families, the fire of 1976, and the beautiful wildlife refuge maintained by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Getting Ready for the Return of the Terns
by Kris Vagos, Wildlife Biologist, Fish & Wildlife Service
On March 24, 2012, we had twelve volunteers from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and Connecticut College who came out to Falkner Island to help us with tern habitat restoration projects. We left from Guilford at 9am and returned at 3pm. They worked on managing the vegetation by clearing back some of the sumac on the northern tip of the upper part of the island. This year we are going to try to create habitat for roseate terns there – as it was a nesting site historically. Another crew of the volunteers worked on assessing the damage caused by tropical storm Irene to the observation blinds. We found that they are in need of repair and that one of them – which
was located on the north spit – is completely gone. Other projects that were worked on were repainting the radial grid used and cleaning up the top of the island of debris so that we can mow. Everyone had a really good time, and we managed to get a lot of work done. Thank you, US Coast Guard Academy and Connecticut College! We will be returning to the island several times in April and have a few volunteer weekends planned with highschools, boyscout troops, USCGA, and Connecticut College.

Excerpts from a Lightkeepers log . . .

Prologue
Elizabeth has a walking route that takes her along Neck Road in Madison to the State Boat Launch area at the end of Circle Beach. That route takes her past Fred Farnsworth’s house. One day in early February 2008, Fred stopped Elizabeth while she was on her walk and asked her if we would be interested in spending the month of September on Faulkner’s Island as the Island Keepers for Fish and Wildlife. For us it was a pretty simple decision. Elizabeth has loved the island since [Read more…]
US Coast Guard Aerial Photos
This exceptional aerial slide show is presented courtesy of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary taken shortly after hurricane Irene in August 2011 for the purpose of assessing damage to the island from the pounding wave surge. The Coast Guard Auxiliary is a volunteer organization dedicated to assisting the US Coast Guard with its missions. The Auxiliary is prohibited from engaging in any military or law enforcement activities, however, it does assist the USCG with other activities. The Auxiliary is best known for its role in providing public education on boating safety but has many other missions. The Auxiliary aviation program is comprised of volunteer pilots and observers who fly missions in support of the Coast Guard using private aircraft. The focus of the flights is on safety, security and stewardship of the environment.
The Light Brigade thanks the Coast Guard Auxiliary for the magnificent aerial photos of Faulkner’s Island.
