Funded by a grant from the Guilford Foundation the Webcam records activities of seals and birds on the rocky north spit of the island. Based on our recent visit to Faulkner’s Island in preparation for the Open House, we encountered a large number of black flies. They cluster on individuals and they bite. This infestation is most likely the result of the dry hot weather we have had this summer. Local sailors and fishermen are also complaining about them while on their boats. Regrettably the Faulkner’s Light Brigade Open House is cancelled for 2016, since it was felt that no one would want to be on the island with the flies. We look forward to better luck in 2017.
