Mission Statement

The Faulkner’s Light Brigade (FLB) was formed as a commission of the Guilford Preservation Alliance in 1991. Its fundamental mission was to investigate the ways and means of saving the historic Faulkner’s Island Lighthouse and the island itself from threatening erosion in the east embankment.

The FLB plans to continue the restoration and preservation of Faulkner Island and the Lighthouse. The Brigade will develop and implement a restoration plan to ensure a high quality outcome for the preservation of the wildlife habitat, the island and the lighthouse, for the benefit of mariners and the general public. This will all be done in conjunction with the US Fish and Wildlife Service and the US Coast Guard.

The Brigade’s achievements including the following:

– 1996 completion of a stairway fabricated from pau lope wood on the west embankment of the island with funds raised through the Women’s Seaman’s Friend Society of Connecticut and the Norcross Wildlife Foundation.

– 1999 completion of the lighthouse restoration in partnership with the Town of Guilford.

– 2001 completion of a unique erosion control project in the east embankment, using trap rock in a stone revetment that is twenty feet up the inclined slope.

The Mission of the Faulkner’s Light Brigade is an ongoing one. Better public access is on the agenda. The popular Spring Lecture Series and the Annual Open House on the island in late summer are two of the Brigade’s special events.
